The Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) are oficial certificates which accredit the level of competence and command of the Spanish language, issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports and the Cervantes Institute is the institution in charge of organizing the exam calls. The DELE exams are recognized internationally and are valid indefinitely.

The DELE exams are designed according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and cover all levels, from A1 to C2. These exams measure the 4 language skills (Reading and listening comprehension and written and oral expression) separately.

The DELE General exams are addressed to an audience of all ages from 16 years old, although there are also DELE exams for schoolchildren, at levels A1 and A2-B1, addressed to students between 11 and 17 years old.

The duration of the exams varies between levels: the lowest level exam (A1) lasts approximately 2 hours, and the highest level (C2) about 5 hours.

The tasks of each test are contextualized in the personal, public, educational and profesional fields, and their objective is to certify the level of general linguistic competence in Spanish. In addition, obtaining this certificate (level A2 or higher) is an essetial requirement for non-Spanish-speaking citizens who wish to obtain Spanish nationality.

The DELE exams include the main variants of Spanish in the comprehension tests from B1 level and the different variants of Spanish are considered valid also in the speaking tests of the candidates.

After the exam in held, the candidate will have the results of the DELE exam within approximately three months.
